Stored Product Insects Control

Stored product insects

Cereal, grain products and other foods stored in kitchen cabinets, pantries or other areas in the home may become infested with insects or other organisms. Nearly all dry, stored human food products as well as dry pet food and birdseed are susceptible. These pests eat and contaminate the products, rendering them useless for consumption and can leave infested foods to crawl or fly around the house.

Control of stored product pests begins with a careful examination of all susceptible materials to find and identify the pests and the extent of the infestation. Most of these pests are beetles, moths or mites. In most circumstances apart from the treatment plan we chose, it is necessary to remove the affected products and thoroughly clean any food remains in cabinets and drawers.

Below is a list of some of the most common stored product insects in Greece.

Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera–Bruchidae) Bean weevil

The adults can reach a size of 3-5mm their body is light to dark brown with lighter color stripes and spots throughout. They infest beans and it is very often for an infestation to start in the field and continue on to the pantry

Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera – pyralidae ) Indianmeal moth

They can reach a size of up to 1cm in length and their color is a mix of grey and brown shades. They infest a wide variety of products such as grains, flours, beans and pet food.

Tineola spp (Lepidoptera -Tineidae) cloth moth

Clothes moths are pests that can destroy fabric and other materials. They feed exclusively on animal fibers, especially wool, fur, silk, feathers and leather. Their size can reach up to 1 cm long and their color is yellow or grayish. Unlike some other types of moths, clothes moths are seldom seen because they avoid light. They prefer dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, basements and attics.

Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) Rice weevil

The adults are usually between 3 and 4.6 mm long, with a long snout. The body color appears to be brown/black. Rice weevils primarily attack rice but they can also feed on wheat and several other crops.

Lasioderma serricorne (Coleoptera, Ptinidae) Tobacco Beetle

The tobacco beetle is around 2–3 mm long, and brown in color. The beetles, which can fly, live 2–6 weeks and do not feed as adults. The larvae are active and will move around on and bore into the product, feeding as they go. Though it primarily attacks tobacco, it can feed on a wide range of grains and seeds.

Dermestes spp (Coleoptera, Dermestidae)

These beetles are 6 – 10 mm long and their body color varies from light to bark brown, with grayish spots or stripes (patterns depending on the exact species). The larvae of these beetles feed on dead and dried animal material, including dead bodies, dried meat and fish, and body parts such as bone, hair, skin, and feathers. They are pests of museums, where they feed on specimens such as dried insects and stuffed animals.
